Bersih rally set to go ahead
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia: Malaysia's electoral reform group, Bersih 3.0, is pushing ahead with a planned rally to be held this Saturday. Organisers are expecting 100,000 people to turn up, calling for free and fair elections.
They added there will be no change in venue. The protest will still be held at the iconic Merdeka Square, even though their application to use the site was rejected by the police and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
The coalition of 84 NGOs is prepared to push ahead with a peaceful sit-in this Saturday, at the historic Merdeka Square at 2pm local time, despite failing to obtain the green light from the city mayor and the cooperation of the city police.
Bersih co-chair Ambiga Sreenevasan said there is no turning back now. "It's a bit late now," she said.
"There has to be a guarantee that the demands of Bersih will be met before the 13th GE. "If there's any sincerity in meeting what we are asking for, that guarantee would have come by now."
The former bar council president added that the slew of law reforms pushed through by Prime Minister Najib Razak in parliament in the past weeks would have meant nothing without free and fair elections.
Apart from cleaning up the electoral roll, said to be full of dubious voters, Bersih also wants the election commission to step down and international observers be allowed in to monitor the coming polls.
They have also refused to change the venue last minute adding that the Merdeka Square is the perfect place for the rally.
Bersih steering committee member Hishamuddin Rais said: "In English, it means Freedom Square. In Arabic, it means Tahrir Square."
Said Ms Ambiga: "This is not going to be Tahrir square, and we believe actually that if at all there are to be changes in government etc, it will be done through the ballot box.
"That's how we want to do it. That's why we want clean and fair elections." Bersih 2.0 last year saw more than a thousand protesters arrested and scores injured during crackdown by riot police.
This time round, the organisers said they are well prepared for Bersih 3.0. More than 6,000 security personnel, including 100 doctors, will be on duty this Saturday.
The Bersih 3.0 rally will be held simultaneously in 11 cities nationwide, while similar protests will be held across 72 cities around the world.
